Assalam alaykum warahamatullah wabarakatu

Assalam alaykum warahamatullah wabarakatu - Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon You.

It’s peculiar when you meet a Muslim at work, school or on the streets and say “Good Morning” or just “Hey” just to break that awkward silence. Subhana Allah I pray this changes your mind not be shy about our greeting in Islam.

Salam has been the greeting of believers right from day one when Adam (AS) was created. It was narrated by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) “…When He (Allah) created him, He said (to Adam), ‘Go and greet that group of angels sitting there, and listen what they say in reply to you, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring.’ Adam (went and) said, ‘Assalam alaykum (Peace be upon you).’ They replied, ‘Assalam alaykum wa rahmatallah (Peace and Allah’s Mercy be with you).’ So they increased ‘Wa rahmatallah.’… ” Sahih Bukhari. It was narrated that Abu Umamah (RA) said: Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The one who is the closest of people to Allah, the Most High is the one who initiates the greeting of Salam.” It is in this matter we came to know that he, the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) even greeted small children with Salam. And on the contrary give a thought to the condition of Muslims at present, whoever possesses wealth or a big position should not have any pride that makes him/ her feel that it is not they who should greet others.

Do you know the Arabs used to greet one another with the words like “An’im sabaahan” or “An’imu sabaahan” which is equivalent to Good Morning. The idea was that because the morning was the first part of the day, the rest of the day will be good too. Then Allah the Sovereign, the Most High prescribed the manner of greeting among the people of Islam- the Muslims should be “al-salaamu alaykum” which is better than any other nations’ greetings which include all impossible ideas or lies, such as saying, ‘May you live for a thousand years’ and ‘Good Morning’ or actions such as prostrating in greeting. It should be known that ‘As-Salam’ is one of the Names of Allah which means, “The Source of Peace” (safety and protection from evil and from faults). Subhana Allah!! What could be more beautiful than to say this words to a fellow Muslim when you meet? It clearly acts and as an identity, a symbol of Islam to foster brotherhood.

Thus the salaam is better than any greeting any nation could possibly come up with. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made spreading salaam a part of faith and once a man asked the Prophet “What is the best thing in Islam?” He said, “Feeding others and giving the greeting of salaam to those whom you know and those you don’t know.” Noticed the ‘al-‘ right? The well-known sunnah is to say “Assalam alaykum”, but using the defined particle ‘al-‘ at the beginning which transforms to ‘as-‘ it becomes Assalam alaykum warahamatullah wabarakatu and I greet you brothers and sisters in Islam.

And Allah knows best.
