Bismillah ir-rahman ir-rahim
Assalam alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatu
How often do we remind ourselves
that this life is nothing but a test? If you had a family member who was in
dire need of your help, you wouldn’t think twice about helping them. If you had
a family member who was being held hostage, you wouldn’t think twice about
risking your own life to save your loved on. If you had a family member who was
in danger and could hurt themselves, you wouldn’t think twice to run to their
rescue. Do we have this thinking in our hearts and mind?
Can you imagine in any of these
situations, that you actually turn your back on your loved one and walk away
not caring? Absolutely not! I believe. We care too much to do something so heartless. But
there will be a day when we would do such a thing. Allah says: “On the Day a man will flee from his brother. And his
mother and his father. And his wife and his children. For every man, that Day,
will be a matter adequate for him. ” [Surah ‘Abasa: 34-37]
The “day” refers to the Day of Judgement
where no one will care except for themselves. Each of the above scenarios, you
will care only for yourself that day because you know that no one can help you
that day. Every person stands alone to be judged. It’s impossible to think
about how that day would be but what we do have is this time, right now in this
life to do things right and help our loved ones. Forgive each other (whether
it’s directly or not) and help each other to become close to Allah.
Sometimes we hold grudges against
people who have hurt us in the past but when looking at a bigger picture nobody wishes
bad for that person to suffer mentally or physically. I’m asking you to look at
the bigger picture, look beyond this life. Even the things we overlook at
times, like forgetting to return something we borrowed, even a pen. Seek
forgiveness for things you may not even remember. These things, you never know
that will be held against you. Forgive and seek forgiveness while you can. I
make it habit once in a while (and some people find me a bit weird because I
will suddenly think of it and mention it), I’ll seek forgiveness from someone
for anything I may have not returned from them unintentionally or cannot
remember. I want to clear my conscious and I want to do the same for me.
Life is not guaranteed to us
tomorrow. As the saying goes, “Plan
like you’ll live forever, live like you’ll die tomorrow.”
May Allah make us amongst those
who are under His shade of Mercy.
